Our Origin

We the members of Sydney Sindhi Association are proud inheritors of our highly developed Indus Valley (Mohan-jo-Daro) civilisation which flourished in the floodplain of mighty River Indus about 2500 BC, stretching across 1.3 million square kilometers from foothills of Himalayas to the Arabian Sea and from Ganges watershed to Gulf of Cambay, north of present day Mumbai.

For thousands of years our ancestors lived, survived and sustained the pressures of various socio-economic and politico-religious set ups in Sindh. Their last Hindu ruler was "Raja Dahir" who was defeated by Muhammad Bin Qasim of Iraq in 712 AD. For next 1100 years Sindh was ruled by Muslim rulers including Afghans, Persians, and Moghals and local Sindhi tribes of Samas, Soomras, Kalhoras and Talpur Balochs.

The seeds of our current social, economic and technological advancement were sown after the British conquest of Sindh when General Sir Charles James Napier defeated the Talpur Baloch rulers of Sindh on the battlefield of Miani in February 1843. Our ancestors adapted to the English rule; they learnt the English language which gave them opportunity to improve their economic, social and political influence in Sindh over next 100 years.

The partition of India on midnight of 14/15 August 1947 uprooted our parents / grandparents from their native Sindh (now in Pakistan) and they were forced to migrate empty handed to India and/or other South East Asian, Middle Eastern or African countries to rebuild their life . For next few decades our families worked hard to establish themselves in different parts of India and world before moving to Sydney to start a new life in Australia.

The Sindhi settlement in Sydney can be traced back to mid 1970s, when few entrepreneurs arrived here to establish their trading business. They were followed by Sindhi Baby Boomers and Gen X professionals in 1980s and 90s who have successfully integrated themselves in mainstream Australia and established themselves in their respective professions and trades. Today the members of our Gens Y and Z are quite competitive within mainstream and multicultural Australia. These highly qualified young Sindhi professionals and students are proudly engaged in developing the knowledge based competitive Australian society ready to play its lead role in the 21st century globalised world.

Sydney Sindhi Association of NSW Inc was registered in 1992 with a view to provide a platform to Sindhi people arriving from all over the world to unite and develop our unique Sindhi culture in Australian context. Many dedicated people have served our community from this platform, and many are looking forward to keep this dream alive  and pass it on to our future generations.
